The album also features the first non-Morten lead vocals, by Magne on The Way We Talk. Paul: We put together a band with Norwegian musicians, and did full takes on all the songs. It was something completely different, it was a much more human expression. This time they made history with the largest paying audience at a concert: 198,000 attended a-ha's concert at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While not an album one can discuss at length, it's an album that's a pleasure to listen to. Liner Notes . East of the Sun, West of the Moon is the fourth studio album by Norwegian new wave band A-ha. It was released on 27 October 1990 by Warner Bros. Named after a Norwegian fairy tale, the album was something of a departure from the band's earlier radio-friendly sound to a darker, moodier tone. It peaked at number one in the band's native Norway and reached top 20 in various European countries and Japan. It was co-produced by Ian Stanley, formerly of the band Tears for Fears. Drums By Per Hillestad. East of the Sun, West of the Moon was a small surprise, too quickly destined for the cut-out bins considering the way a-ha finally went after Hunting High and Low. This is a nicely crafted collection of songs, performed and sung beautifully, with lots of echoes and suggestions tucked into the music. While not an album one can discuss at length, it's an album that's a pleasure to listen to and one that deserves a better reception than the one, unfortunately, that it seems to have gotten. This is the last a-ha album I bought (and then sold back). Disappointing, to say the least. However, "The Way We Talk" is a fantastic track, and one of my favorite a-ha tracks. Buy it on iTunes and skip the rest.

Seriously? Disappointing? When you have such quality Tracks such as Crying in the rain ALL THE WAY UP to the superb Sycamore leaves?? Granted it tails off with Waiting for her (ONE TRACK!) but then back in gear once again with the superb Cold river onto (Seemingly) Non-stop July. Seriously, what's NOT to like - There best Album behind Scoundrel Days for me.

A strikingly cohesive album, and one of the few that I liked whole on the first listen. The Everly Brothers cover provides a great start, and in my opinion, improves on the original by imbuing the song with nearly symphonic pathos. "East Of The Sun..." features some of a-ha's heaviest rock output to date both lyrically and musically, to such a degree as to make me speculate if Jim Morrisson was Furholmen's and Waaktaar's inspiration. While the tracks are separated by gaps, there is an undeniable continuity to the general theme. The cold and forbidding vibe peakes with the title track, a mystical ballad of separation and longing, only to plunge deeper still into bleak, droning darkness that is "Sycamore Leaves". The next track relieves the tension, though a bit too abruptly for my taste. But the last song - a wistful yet light-hearted piano-and-vocal piece - puts everything to rights, banishing the specters of the night with much more convinction than the bright morning optimism of "Waiting For Her" ever hoped to convey.
