Cindytalk operated as a group for many years, but more recently has been a solo project by Cindy Sharp, a Scottish performer and the only constant member since 1982. Cindytalk was formed in 1982 by Cindy Sharp vocals and David Clancy guitar, keyboards from the ashes of Edinburgh-based punknew wave band The Freeze. The in-your-face side of Cindytalk is actually more tempered on Wappinschaw, suggesting power held back rather than fully exploding, making for a fascinating tension throughout. Empty Hand is a fantastic example - Sharp here snarls and croons at the same time to great effect, while the slow trudge of the heavy feedback groove sounds like it's echoing up from the depths of a cavern. cindytalk is the best act 4AD never had. [Gordon Sharp does contribute to 4AD releases, such as the Cocteau Twins' Garlands Bonus CD and This Mortal Coil.]
