My favorite piece is 7 on the first cd. For me, the set of 24 preludes and fugues is Shostakovich's greatest composition. Jarrett's performance is poles apart from the generally favoured, more emotional performance of Tatiana Nikolayeva. Songs in album Дмитрий Шостакович - 24 Preludes And Fugues, CD1 2000. Дмитрий Шостакович - Prelude No. 1 In C-Dur, . Released December 23, 1952. 87 Tracklist. The composer was sufficiently impressed by Nikolayevas daring and musicianship that he started work on his own set of preludes and fugues for piano when he returned to Russia. The work was composed quickly, with each prelude and fugue taking only a few days to complete. One prelude and fugue is in each key signature. Dmitri Shostakovich's epic series of preludes and fugues for solo piano was inspired by the very composer whom you would immediately suspect - Johann Sebastian Bach. Indeed, the Russian composer was motivated to write this huge work after a visit to Bach's home city Leipzig in 1950 and, in fact, it resurrects the premise behind Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, providing one prelude and fugue for every major and minor key.
