It's both of these things, of course, but pigeonholing it as either winds up dismissing the album as a whole, since it is so bloody hard to categorize. What's certain is that Riot is unlike any of Sly & the Family Stone's other albums, stripped of the effervescence that flowed through even such politically aware records as Stand . There's a Riot Goin' On is the fifth studio album by American band Sly and the Family Stone, released on November 20, 1971, by Epic Records. It was music within There's A Riot Goin' On reflects this. For such a unique album, this can be described in a way that - hopefully - everybody will understand. If Radiohead's Kid A was re-made by Andre 3000 The Love Below half of OutKast, this would be the result. It's utterly bewildering, bleak, and possessed of an inspired murkiness not far removed from doom metal. It's still, however, unmistakeably 'soul'. The album embraced a darker and more challenging sound than the optimistic psychedelic soul style of the groups previous records, making use of hard funk rhythms, primitive drum machines, and unconventional mixing techniques. Originally intended to be issued as Africa Talks to You, the record was retitled Theres a Riot Goin' On in response to Marvin Gayes album Whats Going On 1971, released five months before. Received with ambivalence upon its release, the album is now praised as one of the greatest and most influential recordings of all-time, and ranked at or near the top of many. But Sly & the Family Stone never made a more significant album. It's their masterpiece, but it's also one of music's most harrowing and desolate works, and one that reflected the turmoil going on within Stone. After Sly & the Family Stone's rousing Woodstock performance, their leader became unreliable. He missed shows. Stone worked on the album, mostly by himself, throughout 1970 and 1971. Many of his vocals were recorded in his bedroom, with a drum machine driving the beat. The other members of the group later overdubbed their parts. And Stone himself overdubbed even more on top of that. Listen album. Sly and the Family Stone. Songs in album Sly and the Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On 1971.
