Album

The Cedar Walton Hank Mobley Quintet Breakthrough Cobblestone CST 9011 Vinyl, LP, Album US 1972 00:05 A1 Breakthrough 10:43 A2 Sabia 14:58 A3 House is an album by the Cedar WaltonHank Mobley Quintet recorded on February 22, 1972, originally released on the short-lived Cobblestone label and rereleased on the Muse label. It features performances by Hank Mobley and Cedar Walton with Charles Davis, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins and would be Mobley's final studio recording before he retired due to lung problems. As strong as pianist Cedar Walton plays on his session, the main honors are taken by two of his sidemen. Tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, whose career was about to go into a complete eclipse, is in brilliant form, showing how much he had grown since his earlier days. Hank Mobley has always been a personal favourite. A distinctive tenor voice I liken to chocolate malt, rich in tone, a slight fondant slur, and animated in expression, you know its Mobley. He is not driven like Coltrane, not playfully finessing like Rollins, his solo explorations are always interesting, unpredictable, neither speed-driven Johnny Griffin nor overly-measured Dexter Gord.
