Jazz pianist Thelonious Monk's first sessions as a bandleader were recorded between 1947 and 1952, and released on Blue Note records as a series of 78 RPM singles. These singles were then compiled in later years-with additional performances from the sessions-into long-playing album formats. The only drawback about this set of four CD's is that some of them contain unavoidable technical flaws, given the fact that they were made in the late 1940's. The most important jazz musicians are the ones who are successful in creating their own original world of music with its own rules, logic, and surprises. Thelonious Monk grew up in New York, started playing piano when he was around five, and had his first job touring as an accompanist to an evangelist. He was inspired by the Harlem stride pianists James P. Johnson was a neighbor and vestiges of that idiom can be heard in his later unaccompanied solos.
